Collective action across 150 countries is what makes World Food Day one of the most celebrated days of the UN calendar. Hundreds of events and outreach activities bring together governments, businesses, NGOs, the media, and general public. They promote worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure healthy diets for all. World Food Day (WFD), Wednesday, 16 October, begins with a morning ceremony in the Plenary Hall from 9:15, featuring speeches from the three heads of the Rome-based agencies, heads of state, ministers and vice-ministers. The ceremony will also include a video message from UNSG António Guterres, as well as a message from His Holiness Pope Francis read by the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to FAO, Fernando Chica Arellano. The ceremony will be followed by a WFD special event at 11:00 also in the Plenary Hall. Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs will deliver a lecture on food, agriculture and sustainable development.
